Spangled Puzzler Ornament

These ornaments are made with pieces from a discarded  puzzle, glued into a pleasing arrangement using tacky glue, then painted and decorated with sequins, glitter, and spangles. They are approximately 4"  to 4 1/2" tall.

Once the paint dries (you might need multiple coats, or begin with a primer coat and finish with your fashion color), you can podgy the whole surface of the ornament to give it a bit of shine, then set it aside to dry.

When it's dry, embellish the ornament with spangles and sequins glued on with tacky glue, and add some touches of glitter glue for added sparkle.

Several of the spangles I've used on these ornaments are Looney Tunes confettios that date to about 1996; they're out of print now, but you do occasionally see them on ebay or etsy.

The ornament works just as well with other sequin confetti shapes; you can even use shapes cut with paper punches (as in the Mickey Mouse and lobster versions below).  I also used small star sequins and various Christmas-themed spangles,  including a "Merry Christmas" message. Some streaks of glitter glue added extra sparkle.

I painted the first ornament black because I wanted the multi-colored spangles to stand out. However,  other colors also work well, depending on the spangles you're using (see the photos below).

This second puzzler is painted Looney-Tunes red. The filigree effect was created by leaving more open spaces where the puzzle pieces overlap. I love that both Sylvester and Porky are pointing to Tweety!

Not just for Looney Tunes . . .

The spangled puzzler ornaments look great even without the themed confettios. These multicolored versions were painted with metallic paint over a primer coat, then decorated using a just few sequins and some dimensional paint.

The blue-silver and white-red-green ornaments below show other possibilities using stars and Christmas-themed spangles. I do love those "Merry Christmas" spangles.

The Mickey puzzler ornament features silver and red spangles on a black background, with some red glitter as accent. The Mickey silhouette was cut using a paper punch and glued to a red circle cut-out before being attached to the ornament.

The lobster puzzler ornament at left shows a silver "Merry Christmas" spangle, many small star sequins, and several prismatic lobsters. I didn't have small lobster spangles, so I cut these ones from a red prismatic gift bag using my lobster paper punch. The cut-outs tend to curl a bit when glued so you do have to press them flat until the glue grabs, but they worked out very well in place of spangles. Although you can't really see it in the photo, the ornament also has a touch of iridescent glitter on the white surfaces.

This blue ornament (both sides are shown) celebrates a Christmas birthday -- along with the "Merry Christmas" spangles, it features Happy Birthday spangles, birthday hats, balloons, a cake, and wrapped gifts, along with some glitter glue and star sequins.
